12 Top Tips to Save Money on Water and Heating Bills

Having an efficient heating system is one of the most important steps you can take to reduce your home energy bills. With the cost of household bills and everyday living expenses rising significantly, now has never been more important to review ways to save money.

Here are some ideas that will help to save money in the future.
  1. Insulate all your water pipes.
  2. Review your current hot water and heating system to ensure it is running effectively and efficiently. Replace old, warn out, damaged or faulty boilers, pumps, cylinders, TRVs and controls.
  3. Check the type of heating controls you have; consider switching to smart thermostats. These can help reduce overheating your home and cut energy bills.
  4. Use a timer or programmer to control when your heating and hot water comes on and when it goes off because it means you can control your central heating to fit around the way your home is used.
  5. Have your boiler serviced annually to ensure it is operating safely and economically.
  6. "Keep the temperature of your home at a constant 22-23 degrees C and lower it by 5-10 degrees C at night. This simple change can reduce the amount of natural gas you are relying on by 6.5% and lower your electricity consumption by 0.8%." 1
  7. Only heat the rooms you use, as opposed to heating your whole house.
  8. Use the eco mode on your washing machine, and wash your clothes at 30 degrees C whenever possible.
  9. Spend one minute less in the shower every time you shower. "You could save at least £7 per person, per year on your energy bills." 2
  10. Purchase low-flow, water-efficient showerheads. "A household of four people could save an extra £70 a year on gas for water heating, plus £115 a year on water bills if they have a water meter." 2
  11. Draught-proof windows and doors. This could "save around £20 a year on energy bills." 2
  12. Employ qualified, experienced and trusted plumbing and heating engineers to undertake work in your home. DIY can be false economy. Having someone unqualified to do work at a cheaper rate could work out much more costly in the long run.
